The Unsung Hero of Smart Maintenance: How Human Expertise Guides Maintenance AI

The Unsung Hero of Smart Maintenance

We were at the Trimble Insight show this week, and honestly, you can’t walk five feet without hearing someone talk about AI. And it’s exciting. Trimble is launching serious tools—AI agents that scan invoices, predict road call issues, and process orders. It’s exactly the kind of smart technology we need to move the industry forward, especially as they unveil the new AI-powered Trimble TMS and its modules
But I think we need to pump the brakes just a little on the idea that AI is going to solve all our maintenance problems overnight. It’s a powerful tool, perhaps the most powerful one we’ve seen in a while, but it’s just that: a tool. It doesn’t replace the human side of the work, but it really, really improves it.

The Algorithm Doesn’t Wear a Wrench

The big promise of Predictive Maintenance (PdM) powered by AI is simple: sensors and algorithms find the faint signal of a coming failure long before any human could. That’s why you invest in telematics and smart systems like those Trimble offers. That data flow is the lifeblood of a modern fleet. The AI can analyze millions of data points—vibration, temperature, fault codes—and say, “Hey, this asset has a 90% chance of failure in the next 72 hours.”
And that’s an amazing insight. But then what?
An algorithm can’t physically see the hairline crack on a component or smell the burning oil the way an experienced technician can. It doesn’t know if the spare part is in stock or if the asset is absolutely critical to a delivery happening later that day.
The AI gives you an insight. The human team needs to deliver the action. And if that transition point is messy—if it relies on a technician walking back to a desktop, or scribbling notes on paper—you’ve lost the efficiency the AI just created. That’s the critical, unsung step.

Connixt and Trimble: Where the Real Work Gets Done

This is where the real value of an integrated, mobile solution comes in. The true hero of the smart maintenance story isn’t the AI alone. It’s the technician on the shop floor, armed with the right tools that make the AI’s insight immediately actionable.
If you use Trimble TMT for your core maintenance tracking and inventory, you know that system is the backbone. When its new AI capabilities generate a work order based on a predicted failure, that’s a huge step forward.
But that alert needs to become a structured, verified process. Here is what a system like iMarq adds to the process, because we work with TMT, not against it:

  • Human-Centered Workflow: The AI-generated work order instantly shows up on the mobile device of the right technician. It’s simple and digital, right where they need it—next to the asset.
  • Enriched Data Capture: The technician looks at the truck, sees the issue the AI predicted, and then, perhaps, takes a photo of an unexpected secondary fault. They use speech-to-text to record detailed notes about the work. That rich, human-verified data is instantly linked to the TMT work order.
  • Real-Time Context: When the tech needs a part, they look up the live inventory from the TMT system right in the mobile app. That small, quick step is what ensures the data in the back-end (TMT) is always accurate and up-to-date with what’s happening in reality.

It’s less about the AI giving a perfect answer, and much more about the integrated workflow ensuring the human acts on the AI’s data quickly and accurately. That mobile layer is the crucial step between a data signal and a fully completed, documented repair.

Accuracy Over Automation

We are all focused on full automation, I know. But frankly, I think for most operations right now, the goal should be maximum accuracy over maximum automation. That’s a more realistic goal for 2026, I think.
An AI agent that instantly opens a ticket in TMT is great, but a human-validated, fully documented work order that flows seamlessly back into TMT via a tool like iMarq? That’s what actually drives compliance, cuts down on warranty disputes, and speeds up the entire billing cycle. It makes the data that the AI uses next time even better.
So yes, let’s talk about the incredible new AI features announced at the conference. But let’s also remember the tools that empower your crew to properly execute on that intelligence. An alert is only as good as the action you take, and that action needs a smart, mobile, and very human touch.
